A Guide to Preventing Roller Marks When Printing On Edible Sheets

Edible prints are a fun way to decorate cakes, cookies, and pastries. Whether it is a birthday party, wedding anniversary, or graduation day celebration, decorating the cake with memorable pictures makes it special in a unique way. Everyone loves to blow the candles on their cakes. And if the cake is glowing with a picture of the birthday boy/girl or someone or something that he/she likes, it adds a unique and personal dimension to the cake. Of course, a picture that is good in quality is liked by all. However, a picture cake with a distorted image can be embarrassing for both the host and the guests.

Edible printing Sheets

One of the issues that users generally face while printing edible images is the appearance of roller markings on the printouts, especially the darker prints. Following are a few ways by which you can put an end to this issue and will never have to watch your prints getting ruined by the marks ever again. The roller marks occur due to the remaining edible ink trace on the pin feed rollers (the rollers get dripped in a small amount of ink with every print).

These rollers lightly touch the edible papers as they come out of the printer and as a result, dark marks are formed on both ends of the papers. What else causes it? Printer settings – The dark marks occur often because the printer injects more ink on the edible sheets while printing and hence, the ink takes longer to dry.

Humid atmosphere – In high humidity, the edible ink takes longer to dry when printed on edible sheets. With some moisture present in the air, the edible papers can absorb the ink much more quickly.

Edible sheet thickness – Using edible sheets of more thickness can have a deeper impression of the roller marks as most of the printers are designed for a comparatively thinner sheet. For example, edible papers with 0.4 mm thickness would have a more visible mark than the 0.3 mm ones.

How to put an end to it? In order to get a clean print without any spots or marks, you can follow the following steps to rectify the issue: Clean the pin feed rollers – The immediate solution to take care of the problem is to clean the rollers. While doing it, avoid using any strong fabric instead dampen a piece of cardboard and lightly run it on the rollers back and forth to clean any ink residue on the rollers.

Increase space between edible sheets and rollers – increasing the clearance between the edible sheets and pin feed rollers will keep the pins a bit far from the sheets and hence, the marks won’t occur.

You can do it from your printer’s settings. Use dry papers – Edible sheets, especially icing papers, have a tendency to get less absorbable in humid conditions due to which they take longer to absorb the ink once printed. You can dry the sheet in a fan oven for a few minutes before putting them in the printer for getting quickly dried prints without any marks.

Change picture quality setting – You can tweak the quality setting of your printer for a better result. Just experiment with the photo quality options and see which one gives the best result for you as it depends on different kinds of edible sheets; frosting paper might give better results at one setting than the icing sheet and vice versa. Edible photo cakes and confectionaries are not just about celebrations, they are about making memories that would be worth remembering for years to come. Therefore, a mediocre-quality picture would surely not do.
